The second part examines places of worship, identifying the constituent parts of the cathedral and presenting evocative images of roadside shrines. The third part explores celebrations and traditions, including personal devotional tools and jewelry.

For each of the nine themed chapters, illustrated introductory text is followed by a spread-by-spread presentation of the key figures, the key stories and the key iconography relevant to each theme. Paintings and artefacts are examined in detail, identifying and explaining the symbolism and the stories depicted in each. As the book progresses, readers will build up knowledge of the entire Catholic visual code - the symbols that define Catholic practice, the attributes of the saints, the parts of the cathedral - allowing them to interpret Catholic imagery and objects wherever they find them and to understand the tenets, sites and rituals of the faith." Redelijke verantwoording van een persoonlijke keuze waarin de classica en filosofe Cornelia de Vogel haar eigen keuze voor de katholieke kerk beargumenteerde.
Ook voor Cees Luttik, die in verschillende fasen van zijn leven contact met De Vogel onderhield, speelt een redelijke verantwoording van de Waarheid, die door de Catholica van het Nieuwe Testament en de Kerkvaders is doorgegeven, een belangrijke rol. De verdeeldheid van de theologie na het Tweede Vaticaans Concilie liet diepe sporen bij hem na: wat is er geworden van de Waarheid, die toch één is?
Luttik kon de moderne theologische ontwikkelingen weliswaar niet erg waarderen, hij volgde ze wel degelijk, las tijdschriften en boeken van conservatieve tot ultraradicale snit om zelf al denkend zijn positie te bepalen bij het zoeken naar die éne Waarheid in die ene Catholica.
Van deze levenslange theologische zoektocht brengt de auteur in dit deel van de MemoReeks een persoonlijk getint verslag uit. Het is een autobiografie geworden vol twijfels, waarin echter niet zozeer de geloofsbeleving als wel de geloofsovertuiging centraal staat, niet de orthopraxie maar de orthodoxie.

This volume brings together a rich and varied collection of essays by Gilles Quispel (1916-2006), Professor of the History of the Early Church at Utrecht University from 1951 until his retirement in 1983. During his illustrious career, Professor Quispel was also visiting Professor at Harvard University in 1964/65, and visiting Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven from 1969 until 1974. The fifty essays collected in this volume testify to most of the prominent themes from Professor Quispel’s scholarly career: the writings of the Nag Hammadi library in general and the Gospel of Thomas in particular; Tatian’s Diatessaron and its influences; the Hermetica; Mani and Manichaeism; the Jewish origins of Gnosticism; and Gnosis and the future of Christianity. This volume also makes a number of his less known earlier publications (mainly presented under the heading ‘Catholica’) available to the international community. Until shortly before he died, Professor Quispel remained active in his study of the Gospel of Thomas. He had been one of the first to acquire the Coptic text of the Gospel of Thomas, of which he published the first translation in 1959 and his final translation in 2005. He was also active in researching the Diatessaron, and Valentinus ‘the Gnostic’. Mag ik u zeggen: lees en herlees dit werkje: De Geestelijke Strijd niet ééns, maar herhaaldelijk en voortdurend; lees niet te spoedig of te veel op eens; en als het u soms bij de eerste lezing niet gevallig is, wil het dan niet terstond ter zijde leggen, want bij een tweede en derde lezing zult gij beter begrijpen en er dieper ingaan; gij zult vervolgens het gelezene trachten in beoefening te brengen en aldus uw zaligheid verzekeren.
