An iconographic method of Old Testament exegesis with three case studies from Third Isaiah
1.1 Introduction
The world of the Hebrew Bible. did not exist only in words, but also in things one can touch and even in pictorial items. Interest in the material culture of the Hebrew Bihle. led Jews to discuss (and prohably visit) the assumed ruins of the tower of Babel in the 3rd century CE;’ in the 4th centnry CE, it brought the pilgrim
of Bordeaux (333CE) and Egeria to Egypt and the Near East, as well as Jerome. Other famous examples of persons sharing this interest are Helena and Cyril from Jerusalem. And many followed to see the remain of the culture of the Hebrew Bible. About 550 CE, concern with how specific things had looked like, lead to
illustrations of the Tent, of Meeting and the Telliple of Solomon. Depictions of objects and Bible stories even have longer history, especially in synagogue art..
